Overcomes deafness to play the piano
Holly Loach was left brain damaged after she was diagnosed with life threatening pneumococcal meningitis as a 13 month old.
Her devastated parents Hannah and Mike – both talented musicians – were told she would never be able to hear or fully appreciate music.
But in February 2001, Holly was fitted with a cochlear implant in her right ear – a surgically inserted electronic device that provides a sense of sound for the profoundly deaf.
And seven years later she was given a second in her left, which enabled her to hear music, but interpreting different sounds was still difficult.
The technology has allowed Holly to overcome the odds to reach grade five on the piano.
Mrs Loach, a 41 year-old music teacher, praised her daughters’ ‘’special talent.”
She said: ”Her playing is a miracle.
”The implant provides a version of sounds but it is up to Holly to interpret it.
”The horror of what had happened to Holly was all-consuming.
”My husband Mike and I are both musicians and music was all around. I was playing for ballet dancers when I was pregnant so she heard a lot of Chopin in the womb.
”A life without music and sound was a devastating prospect.”
